TALLAHASSEE, FL – After eighteen months with no executions in our state, Mark Asay is scheduled to be executed on Thursday, August 24, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. Asay received two death sentences for the 1987 murders of Robert Lee Booker and Robert McDowell.
The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops has joined the USCCB Committee on Catholic Education and numerous other entities in support of #EdTaxCredit50, an advocacy campaign proposing the creation and adoption of a national education tax credit program. In such a program, donations made to certain non-profit scholarship organizations would generate federal tax credits for individuals and corporations. This charitable activity would increase K-12 options for low and middle-income families, including the ability to send their children to faith-based and independent schools.
Last month, a Tallahassee judge allowed Florida officials more time to present their defense of a 2015 law requiring women to wait 24 hours before having abortions. Leon County Circuit Judge Terry Lewis gave the state an additional 60 days to make its case. In February 2017, the Florida Supreme Court approved a temporary injunction against the law, blocking it from taking effect in light of the pending legal challenge in Gainesville Woman Care v. State of Florida.
