State lawmakers convened Tuesday for the traditional start of the annual Florida Legislative Session. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner shared opening remarks before welcoming Governor DeSantis to deliver the State of the State address.
Passidomo made a point to thank guests, legislators and their families for being present despite inclement weather. "Family reminds us of where we came from, where we are going, and what we are fighting for," said Passidomo. "As we begin this new session, it’s our families who inspire us to work for a better future for all families throughout Florida.”
Renner lauded progress the state has made in recent years. "Amid significant national and international challenges, Florida rises above the rest with an unbreakable commitment to our nation’s core foundations," said Renner. "By remaining faithful to those foundations, Florida has become a place of great prosperity, opportunity, and quality of life."
Governor DeSantis took to the stage and put a spotlight on Florida's historically low crime rates, low unemployment, state budget surplus and groundbreaking school choice legislation as some achievements by his administration. "The 2023 Legislative Session was monumental, and it is incumbent upon us to build upon those accomplishments as we continue to deliver results," said DeSantis. "My message is simple: stay the course. The state of our state is strong. Let’s keep doing what works. Let’s continue to make Florida the envy of the nation."
