Recently, Catholic advocates like you urged President Biden to commute the death sentences of the 40 people who were on federal death row. Thanks in large part to those efforts, President Biden commuted 37 of those death sentences on December 23. As Archbishop Timothy Broglio, president of the USCCB, said, “These commutations are a significant step in advancing the cause of human dignity in our nation.” Our collective voice has made a difference!
We know more work remains in eliminating the use of the death penalty. Ahead of the World Day of Peace on January 1, the Holy Father stated, “…I would like once more to propose a concrete gesture that can help foster the culture of life, namely the elimination of the death penalty in all nations. This penalty not only compromises the inviolability of life but eliminates every human hope of forgiveness and rehabilitation.”
