Before the start of the Legislative Session, the Florida Department of Corrections presented its annual update and budget request to the Legislature. The state continues to face conditions of severe underfunding and understaffing. In the past five years, the inmate population increased by 10,000, but the number of staff did not increase. There is only one staff member for every one hundred inmates, and there has been a large increase in assaults upon officers and other inmates. Governor DeSantis' recommended budget includes significant increases in funding for the Department. FCCB welcomes this recommendation and urges the Legislature to incorporate it into the budget for the coming year.
