The U.S. Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services (HHS) have recently published a proposed regulation that seeks to alter and undermine the existing Flores Settlement Agreement (FSA). The FSA sets forth basic standards regarding the care, custody, and release of immigrant children while they are in federal custody. FCCB submitted comments opposing the changes that DHS and HHS are attempting to implement. The comments site several concerns, primarily the inhumane and costly expansion of family detention. The detention of children (with or without their families), even for a short period of time, is damaging to a child's development, health, and well-being. Comprehensive immigration reform is needed today. Until it is achieved, our nation must not abandon our own humanity by mistreating innocent immigrant children. |
