On October 23, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida granted a stay of execution until December 30, 2019 to allow Mr. Dailey's newly appointed federal counsel time to present his substantial claims of innocence. Dailey was scheduled to be executed on November 7.
Prior to the stay of execution, Catholic faithful and members of the community planned to gather to pray for the victim, the aggressor and their families, for our society that continues to impose violence in return for violence, and for an end to the use of the death penalty. Some of the vigils will continue to be held to also pray in thanksgiving for the temporary stay of execution.
