The FCCB is supporting several criminal justice reform measures that promote rehabilitation and restoration over retribution, and acknowledge the human dignity of all persons, even those who have caused harm.
Two of those measures unanimously passed the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee (13-0) on Monday, February 3:
Recognizing an adult jail is no place for a child, HB 421 (Alexander) prohibits a child being tried as an adult from being held in a facility intended for the detention of adults. The Senate companion bill, SB 618 (Powell), is scheduled to be heard by its first committee of reference on Tuesday, February 11.
HB 1259 (Jones) prohibits the involuntary placement of incarcerated pregnant women in restrictive housing. Companion SB 852 (Pizzo) was passed unanimously by its first committee of reference, Senate Criminal Justice, (5-0) last month.
