On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved SB 1792 (Grall). The bill requires that websites or applications containing a substantial portion of material harmful to minors must contract a third party to verify the age of users attempting to access the content. Efforts to protect children under the age of 18 from consuming harmful online content have received bipartisan support from lawmakers in both chambers.
Most young people are exposed to porn by age 13, with some exposed even younger. Pornography available online today is often physically and verbally violent and abusive. Research demonstrates that porn consumption is a significant predictor of sexual aggression and teaches minors to associate sex with violence.
Companion bill HB 3 sponsored by Representative Chase Tramont has already received final passage in the House. SB 1792 must pass one final committee before being taken up by the full Senate.
