The Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of his Church guide the work of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops which, through relationships with representatives and agencies of Florida government, analyzes the moral dimension of public policies, proclaims the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person, leads decision makers in reaching just solutions, and provides opportunities for Catholics in Florida to carry out their responsibility to participate in political life.
- FCCB Vision
To serve as a liaison to state government on matters of concern to the Catholic Church in the seven dioceses of the Province of Miami, as a nonpartisan public policy voice on behalf of the Catholic bishops of Florida.
On March 19, 2012, the bishops of Florida established the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FCCB), under which they engage in policy and advocacy activities related to state and federal legislation and government agency regulation.
The FCCB speaks for the Church in matters of public policy and serves as liaison to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. It works with state and federal legislative bodies and administrative agencies, as well as other stakeholders. The FCCB participates in many policy areas, including social and welfare matters, such as immigration, housing, health care, and criminal justice reform; educational matters, including parochial and public schools; right to life issues, including abortion and euthanasia; and matters affecting human sexuality, marriage, and the family unit.
Positions on issues of concern are determined by analyzing the moral dimension of public policies in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of his Church. Conference positions do not parallel party platforms or serve to support or oppose elected leaders or candidates.
The following are the current policy/advocacy committees of the FCCB: State Pro-Life Coordinating Committee; Schools Executive Committee; Catholic Health Executives Committee; Committee for End-of-Life Care; and Justice and Peace Committee (Catholic Charities Directors).
Prior to the establishment of the FCCB, public policy advocacy was carried out under the Florida Catholic Conference (FCC), established on February 1, 1969, as an agency of the Catholic bishops of Florida. Today, the FCC continues to provide and facilitate an accessible channel of communication by which the (arch)bishops of the Province of Miami may undertake and direct joint pastoral, educational, and social welfare projects that promote the material and moral well-being of the people of Florida.
The archbishop and bishops of the seven (arch)dioceses in Florida constitute the board of directors of both the FCC and FCCB.
