TALLAHASSEE, FL – On behalf of the board of directors of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FCCB), Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami congratulates Governor Rick Scott on his election to a second term as chief executive of Florida.
The archbishop conveys the willingness of the bishops of Florida to help address the challenges facing all Floridians, especially those at the margins of society. "We will continue to work with the governor in the all-important work of defending human dignity and protecting human life, as well as pursuing the common good of all, especially the poor, the unborn, the immigrant and other vulnerable populations," said Archbishop Wenski, FCCB president.
In addition to underscoring the moral dimensions of public policies, the bishops bring their experience serving the community through Catholic schools, hospitals, charities and social service agencies to the public debate. Following Christ's example, the Church is called to care for its neighbors and to serve society's neediest brothers and sisters.
The bishops of Florida hope to continue a decades-old tradition of meeting with the sitting governor to discuss policy initiatives when they are gathered in Tallahassee for the annual Catholic Days at the Capitol and Red Mass of the Holy Spirit. The 2015 Red Mass held at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More will take place on March 4 at 6:00 p.m. for the purpose of asking the Lord to guide and inspire the decisions of those working in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government, as well as the legal profession. Catholic Days at the Capitol brings together Catholics from across Florida to learn about public policy issues of concern to the Church and meet with lawmakers.
